Health Savings Account (HSA)

The HSA is a tax-advantaged account available to those who enroll in the eBay PPO with HSA. The HSA helps you meet that plan's higher deductible by giving you a way to pay for qualified medical expenses, including deductibles and copays, using pre-tax money.

  • eBay makes an annual contribution to the HSA at the beginning of the plan year1 — $550 for individual coverage or $1,100 for family coverage.
  • If you choose to contribute, your contributions will be made on a pre-tax basis.
  • For 2018, the maximum total annual contribution that can be made to your HSA (your contributions and eBay's contributions combined) is $3,450 for employee-only coverage and $6,900 if you cover dependents. For 2019, the maximum total annual contribution that can be made to your HSA  is $3,500 for employee-only coverage and $7,000 if you cover dependents.
  • If you will be age 55 or older in 2018 or 2019, you can make an additional "catch-up" contribution of $1,000.
  • Your HSA balance earns tax-free interest and investment returns.
  • You can use the HSA to pay for qualified medical expenses, including deductibles and copays.
  • Any HSA money you don't spend stays in your account to help you save for future medical and retiree health expenses.
  • Your HSA belongs to you. You take it with you if you leave the plan, leave the company or retire.
  • The HSA is administered by HealthEquity.

1If you are newly enrolled, eBay's contribution will be made during the next one or two pay periods after your enrollment.

If you enroll in the eBay PPO with HSA, you also can enroll in a health care Flexible Spending Account (FSA). But, if you enroll in both, the IRS will limit reimbursement under the health care FSA to dental and vision expenses only. (This is called a "limited-use FSA.") Keep this limitation in mind when deciding how much to contribute to your health care FSA.

Here's how the health care FSA and HSA differ and how they work together:
